Imported from Asia, tulips have become the symbol of passion over European countries. Brought in Romania by Turks (first decade of the 18th Century), these floral crops are now a very common species of flowers. In the Floriculture Laboratory from Eforie Nord, more than 200 varieties of tulips were gathered. Another important city where tulips were grown was Oradea. An horticulturist from here brought the first bulbs in Pitești around the ‘70s and, since then, over 150,000 tulips bulbs are planted every autumn to bloom in spring with colour and love in public spaces, parks or private gardens.

Yearly, City Hall is the official “host” of the Tulip Symphony, the most important artistic and cultural event exhibition from Pitești. Becoming a tourist attraction, the Tulip Symphony is a genuine festival where concerts are held by popular Romanian artists, young people sing, dance and even participate in sporting events as cross country or biking races. The festival also has a children’s parade and a variety of interesting contests for tulips lovers.

Naturally, flowers and tree exhibitions are the main attraction. This year, from 19th to 21st of April, the floral exhibition from Book House will gather hundreds of flowers and ornamental plants manufacturers and traders (from Romania and abroad). Their offer will consist of numerous flower varieties: ice age flower, dwarf dahlia, roses, strawberries in pots, orchids, rosemary, gerbera, Thuya or ornamental clover. Of course, tulips are the main attraction, by their arrangements celebrating cultural personalities of Romania (as Mihai Eminescu) or sporting events.

More than 1 million people visit Pitești during this period. Because every man from Pitești has his own tulip, the Tulip Symphony has become a tradition, tradition that celebrates nature and love. If one wants to become part of this celebration, then Pitești centre (Argeș county) must be visited until 21st of April at 5 p.m., when this cultural and floral event will close its colourful wings.
