Pasărea Monastery

Pasarea, the Nun Monastery

Pasărea Monastery is situated in Brăneşti town, Ilfov county. Founded in 1813, the Monastery is located near the river with the same name.

At first, there was Archimandrite Timotei’s wooden church, who was also Abbot at Cernica Monastery. First half of 19th century ending, Holy Hierarch Calinic from Cernica helped with the construction of “Saint Trinity” Church, the main building of this place. While the big church original paintings were executed by painters from Mount Athos, those of cemetery church are signed by Nicolae Polcovnicu.

In 1967, Patriarch Justinian decided to recondition Pasărea Monastery. Besides the ordinary repairs, all the cells (more than 60) benefited from running water, central heating system and electric lighting. The museum was better organized and, over the years, it stored King’s donations (Carol I of Romania donated a candle and a priest vestment), gospels and books from the 19th century, many icons (wooden, filigree or silver icons) and 2 busts of Theodor Pallady and Mihai Eminescu, carved by sculptor Gheorghe Anghel who lived at Pasărea from 1904 till 1966. He is buried at Pasărea cemetery where several funerary monuments were signed by him.

Starting 1995, Pasărea Monastery organizes orthodox seminaries. As every religious place from Romania, this Nun Monastery offers genuine and relaxing moments of spiritual introspection.
