Marcel Iureș – Renowned Romanian Actor

Marcel Iures is one of the most acclaimed stage and screen actors from Romania, having starred in more than two dozen features in his native country and twice being named Best Romanian Actor. Born on 2nd of August 1951 at Băilești, he graduated Bucharest Theatre & Film Academy (1978) and his debut was on the stage of Bulandra Theatre – “Ferma” play (The Farm).

Since his debut, Marcel has enjoyed a prolific stage career, being famous for his acting in Shakespeare plays (Horatio – 1985 and Hamlet – 2000 in Hamlet, Lisander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream). But his acting career means a neverending list of spectacular appearances in numerous Romanian theatrical plays: The Man Outside by Wolfgang Borchert, The Persians by Aeschylus, No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, The Mountain Giants by Luigi Pirandello, The Third Impale by Marin Sorescu, Three Sisters by Anton Cehov, A Stormy Night by I. L. Caragiale and many more, plays directed by personalities of Romanian culture as Mihai Mănuțiu, Alexandru Tocilescu, Ion Caramitru, Liviu Ciulei etc. Marcel’s main appearances take place at Bucharest National Theatre, Cluj-Napoca National Theatre, Bulandra or Odeon Theatres from Bucharest.

His film career includes: “Artista, dolarii și ardelenii”, “Să mori rănit din dragoste de viață”, “Un bulgăre de humă”, “Balanța”, “O vară de neuitat” etc., but Iureș shared his talent in several notorious movies. His American film credits include The Peacemaker, Mission Impossible, Interview with the Vampire, Layer Cake, Amen, Hart’s War, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Youth without Youth etc.

After 1989 Romanian Revolution, Marcel left for Hollywood, but he returned to Bucharest in 1998 and created ACT Theatre, the only independent stage in Romania. Twice awarded by UNITER (Romanian Theatre Union) with Best Theatre Actor title, Marcel was also honoured with the Award of Excellence by UNITER and nominee at  British Theatre Awards in TNA – Manchester și Manchester Evening Awards.

President of International Independent Film Festival “Anonimul” since 2004, Marcel Iureș  is mostly praised by Romanian theatre critics for his exceptional acting in 2 Shakespeare plays: Richard II and Richard III, where he was the protagonist.
