Gică Popescu – Great Romanian Football Player

Born on 9th of October 1967 in Calafat, Dolj county, Gheorghe Popescu, mostly known as Gică Popescu, was a great Romanian football player.

As a player in the national football team of Romania, he won 3 World Championship final tournaments (1990, 1994 and 1998) and 2 European Championships (1996 and 2000). He started playing football at FC Universitatea Craiova, Steaua (Bucharest), PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, U.S. Lecce, Galatasaray SK and SV Hannover 96, gaining 13 trophies. He declared that the period when he was captain of FC Barcelona turned out to be the best time of his life.

After quitting football, he has successfully started to run important businesses, mostly in hotels and real estate areas. For him, there are similarities between football game and business: seriousness, lot of work and a wisely-chosen team to lead.

As a former football player, Gică Popescu will remain faithful to his first love. At present, he is the president of FC Chindia Târgoviște and football manager, but he also wants to be a candidate for Romanian Football Federation (FRF) – president seat, at 2014 elections. He is also the founder of Gică Popescu Craiova” Football School. Modern and covering an area of 50.000 m2, the football school is situated in Craiova city, 191 Calea București, Dolj county.
